Cofense Co-Founder and CTO Aaron Higbee Named 2021 Washingtonian Tech Titan

Leesburg, Va. – May 14, 2021 – Cofense, the leading provider of phishing detection and response (PDR) solutions, today announced that Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Aaron Higbee was named to Washingtonian’s 2021 Class of Tech Titans. Higbee, listed under cybersecurity specialists, was one of less than 200 people featured on Washingtonian’s exclusive list of the most important and innovative leaders in Washington’s digital economy who proved resilient in the face of COVID-19.

This win marks the second time that Higbee has been named a Tech Titan, also having earned the title in 2017 along with Cofense Co-founder and CEO, Rohyt Belani. Higbee pioneered the best practice of phishing simulations which are now embraced by security teams in every major industry. His leadership at Cofense has contributed to the company’s position as the global leader in intelligent phishing defense, resulting in a network of over 26 million people around the world who identify, report and share suspected phish information providing security operations teams with actionable phishing intelligence. He is named as an inventor on 19 granted U.S. patents, as well as other pending U.S. and international patent applications.

“When a major event or emergency arises, phishing emails exploiting human emotions and global attention are never far behind. The COVID-19 pandemic was no exception, and malicious actors actively capitalized on natural human emotions in response to this public health crisis,” said Belani. “I am proud to work with Aaron, who worked tirelessly with our team to equip cybersecurity teams with accurate, up to date information related to the upsurge in COVID-19 related phishing emails and malware through our Coronavirus Phishing Infocenter launched in March 2020 to help protect organizations and end users during this public health emergency.

“I am not sure how else to say this: the current approach to phishing filters isn’t working. I continue to work with the amazing Cofense team to study this problem and innovate ways to stop the damage. Outdated filtering technology in the SEG is failing to keep pace with the creative techniques developed by attackers. Millions of phish bypass these expensive, legacy and slow-to-deploy SEGs every day. Our current solution leverages the powerful combination of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and crowd-sourced data to protect, detect and respond to email attacks, ensuring that they are removed proactively from customer environments – in a cost-efficient way.”

Throughout the rest of 2020, Higbee contributed to many other milestones for Cofense, including: the launch of a comprehensive resource center and easy-to-use Real Phishing Threats searchable database to help organizations see the phishing threats that slip past their secure email gateways (SEG); hosting Virtual Submerge; a new Community Resource Center exclusively for customers; the addition of Auto Quarantine for Vision and other new product capabilities; and the release of Cofense’s PDR platform. Most recently, Cofense announced in April 2021 the acquisition of Cyberfish, bringing to market a holistic, advanced automation solution for email protection, detection, and response.
