When an email arrives that deviates from a user's established profile, the system can flag it as potentially malicious.

While effective in theory, this approach raises serious questions about data privacy and security. The strategy requires harvesting and processing enormous volumes of personal user data, which can create significant risks.

Concerns include:

  • Data Sovereignty: Who truly owns and controls this data once it's fed into the AI? Often, the vendor assumes control, deciding how your sensitive information is stored, used, and potentially even shared.
  • User Consent: Are your employees aware that a third-party vendor is analyzing all of their digital interactions? This level of data collection, often happening without full user understanding or consent, can cross ethical and legal lines.
  • Regulatory Violations: Data privacy laws like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) mandate transparency, accountability, and robust security measures for handling personal information. An AI system that collects data without clear governance could put your organization at risk of hefty fines and reputational damage.

 

Who Is in Control of Your Data?

Beyond the lack of algorithmic transparency, a fundamental issue is the loss of control over your own data. When a user reports a suspicious email and it is sent to the vendor for AI analysis, your organization often relinquishes its authority over that information. The vendor may use that data to train its models for other customers, store it in ways that don't meet your security standards, or manage it without your oversight. 

This shift in control leaves you unable to dictate or monitor how your sensitive information is handled, creating a significant and often overlooked security gap. You are trusting an external party with your internal communications, customer data, and intellectual property without having a say in its lifecycle.

Demanding a Clearer Path Forward
